The WSET® Level 1 Award in Spirits provides a practical introduction to the world of spirits for individuals with little or no prior knowledge. Designed for hospitality professionals, beverage professionals, students, and anyone looking to build foundational spirits knowledge, the program introduces the major spirits categories, how spirits are produced, and the principles behind creating balanced cocktails.
Participants will explore how raw materials, fermentation, distillation, maturation, blending, and other production decisions influence the style and character of a spirit. The program also introduces key spirits terminology, major international categories, and the fundamentals of cocktail balance and service.
Successful participants will build the knowledge needed to confidently discuss spirits, respond to customer questions, and make informed recommendations in hospitality, restaurant, retail, and beverage-service environments.
By the end of this experience, you will be able to:
- Explain the primary stages involved in spirits production.
- Identify the differences between pot and column distillation.
- Recognize the principal categories and styles of spirits.
- Explain how raw materials and production methods influence the character of spirits.
- Understand common spirits terminology and labeling.
- Recognize the basic characteristics of aromatized wines.
- Explain the principles used to create a balanced cocktail.
- Identify major cocktail families and representative examples.
These objectives align with WSET’s three formal learning outcomes covering spirits production, principal spirits and aromatized wine categories, and cocktail balance.
